Features and Function

• The open coil spring is designed with non-contacting coils.

• The archwire is threaded through the center of the spring, and the spring is compressed between brackets. As the spring returns to its original shape, it applies a pushing force on each adjacent tooth, creating or opening space.

• Open coil springs can be made of stainless steel (SS) or Nickel-Titanium (NiTi), each offering different force characteristics.

• They are commonly used in the posterior segments to open space (or reopen previously closed space) for missing teeth.

• NiTi open coil springs can be activated to 50%; when activated, they release a gentle force that is highly effective for moving a single tooth. Using a NiTi spring to open space across an entire arch is less efficient. Therefore, these springs are most commonly used during the progressive archwire stage to distalize a single tooth.
