Purpose The pulse oximeter is a compact, non-invasive device that measures blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate (PR) through the fingertip. It helps users and patients (especially those with COVID-19) quickly detect hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels) even when no obvious symptoms are present.

SpO2 Reference Values

• Normal blood oxygen saturation: 98–100%
• COVID-19 patients with SpO2 < 94% are typically indicated for supplemental oxygen therapy

How to Use the Pulse Oximeter Correctly

1. Warm your hands by rubbing them together before placing the finger in the device.
2. Rest your hand stably on a flat surface (e.g., table).
3. Keep your finger and hand completely still for at least 1 minute during measurement to ensure maximum accuracy.

Factors That Can Affect Measurement Accuracy

• Cold hands or low blood pressure
• Excessive movement during measurement
• Direct strong light (sunlight or bright lamps) shining on the sensor
• Nail polish, artificial nails, or dirt on the fingernail

Tip for best results: Use the index or middle finger, remove any nail polish, and measure in a dimly lit, calm environment with warm hands.
